A recap of Vietnam’s recruitment in 2024

In 2024, Vietnam navigated economic uncertainty and a transition in political leadership but demonstrated remarkable resilience by year-end. GDP growth was recorded at 7.09%, exceeding the government’s target at 6.5%(i). Foreign direct investment (FDI) reached USD38.23 billion, with manufacturing (68.1%) and real estate (18.8%) attracting the largest shares(ii). Newly licensed investment projects were led by investors from Singapore, China, and South Korea. The approval and completion of several landmark infrastructure and energy projects further reinforced Vietnam’s long-term economic growth trajectory.

The recruitment market closely reflected these economic trends, with cautious hiring strategies, talent shortages in key industries, and evolving workforce demands. Challenges such as high turnover, skill gaps, and operational optimisation persisted, yet hiring remained strong in Technology, Healthcare, and Manufacturing, driven by continued investment and expansion.

Meanwhile, job seekers faced increasing challenges in securing roles that aligned with their expectations. Employers prioritised technical expertise, leadership, communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. Language skills, particularly in English and Chinese, continued to be a competitive advantage, with Chinese becoming more popular in some sectors.

Talent market trends for 2025

Adecco Vietnam's recent research, with 87% of participants having at least 2 years of experience, highlights 3 key megatrends shaping work life: digitalisation, flexible work models, and Gen AI. Digitalisation has been a driving factor for years, as companies adopt smarter practices to boost productivity. Flexible work remains in demand post-Covid, though implementation varies by sector, with hybrid and remote options more common in sectors like IT and Professional services. Gen AI, with tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Bard is increasingly integrating into daily tasks, particularly in content creation, data analysis, and customer service.

Amid economic uncertainties, 65% of survey professionals experienced salary increases below 10% in 2024, while 15% received raises above 20%, compared to 59% and 23% in 2023. Expectations for 2025 are even higher, with 37% expecting a raise of over 20%.

Open to new job opportunities continues to rise, with 72% of respondents open to a career move in 2025, up from 69% in 2024 and 37% in 20223. This trend highlights a dynamic talent market, with both challenges and opportunities for employers. Top preferred job search channels are recruitment agency (77%), LinkedIn (66%) and referrals (60%).

The key factors influencing employees to stay with their current companies closely align with their top priorities when considering a job change: Compensation & benefits, Career development opportunities, Company culture and Work-life balance. However, when looking for new opportunities, Salary remains the key driver above all other factors.

In Vietnam, AI adoption mainly remains on basic automation, such as simple coding, customer service, data analysis, and content creation. It is currently being applied in different management levels. Mid-levels are increasingly using AI for analysis and planning, while senior leaders are leveraging it as an advanced tool for forecasting, decision-making support, and operational optimisation. 65% survey participants recognise AI’s efficiency, while 54% see its role in supporting strategic thinking, and 35% highlight the need for upskilling to maximise the impact.

DE&I is gaining traction in Vietnam’s workplace, primarily driven by multinational corporations and globally connected sectors. While still an emerging priority, local and private businesses are gradually adopting DE&I initiatives as their employees increasingly value inclusive and equitable work cultures.

Navigating opportunities in 2025

Despite ongoing global uncertainties driven by geopolitical tensions and shifting economic conditions, Vietnam enters 2025 with optimism and a focus on adaption. Digital transformation and AI will continue to shape hiring trends across industries. Vietnam’s strategic partnership with Nvidia highlights the country’s commitment to advancing technology and attracting investment in chip manufacturing. Demand for tech talent, AI expertise, and digital skills is expanding beyond Tech sector into Retail, Finance, and Manufacturing, where automation and data-driven are becoming essential for business growth.

Additionally, data security, ESG and DE&I are gaining traction in the workplace, requiring business to invest in these areas while professionals upskill to meet the job demands.
